About this parish:

Moose Factory is situated on an island approximately 5 km long by 4kms wide at the mouth of the mighty Moose River. The community of Moose Factory remains Canada’s oldest surviving English speaking community. The establishment of a post at Moose Factory in 1673 became the headquarters at the “bottom of the bay” (James Bay) and the most important post for the development of the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) in the 17th century. The combined population of Moose Factory is approximately 2,500 people. There are 3 local governments, Moose Cree First Nation, Local Services Board and the Mocreebec. English and 3 dialects of Cree are predominantly spoken along with some French. In the year 2000 St. Thomas Anglican Church purchased the newly renovated Roman Catholic church which ceased operations in 1999 due to a decrease in parishioners.
